Is it time to go fragrance-free?

While this fact may seem daunting, it can be the wake-up call we need to empower ourselves to make healthier choices. Just like clean eating, it’s important to start looking at the ingredients that you are applying to your skin. 

Sweet LeiLani Cosmetics works within the medical community with patients dealing with many health issues as well as skin issues. Our founder, LeiLani, has worked carefully to create formulas that nourish and enrich all skin types. As part of our skin series, we want to break down different elements of ingredients that are commonly seen in makeup and skincare products and to start it off, we’re talking about fragrance. 

For all Sweet LeiLani products, we don’t use any type of fragrance other than that of Vitamin C. Any odours from our products come directly from the raw ingredients. Fragrances are complex combinations of natural and/or man-made chemical substances that are added to many consumer products – in this case, skincare and makeup – to give them a distinctive smell. Fragrances are used in a wide variety of products to impart a pleasant odour, and mask the inherent smell of raw ingredients, and enhance the experience of using the product. That being said, fragrances can be highly toxic. They contain phthalates, which are chemicals that help the scents last longer and these chemicals, like other toxic substances, can pass from the skin and into the blood. 

Fragrances can also have a sensitizing reaction on your skin. This is true not only for individuals prone to redness or already sensitive skin but for everyone and anyone. In fact, you might not see the damage on your skin itself, but it can be building up minor problems for your skin in the short term day over day and fluctuating into worse problems in the long term.

As you know, at Sweet LeiLani, health is our number one priority. We only use ingredients that are pure, potent and health-promoting with dosages backed by science. And this means that all our products are 100% fragrance-free. From our skincare products such as cleansing face wash and moisturizer to our skincare foundation, we aim to calm, soothe, and protect the skin. The scents from our product are 100% natural. For example, our Prep, Prime, and Powder Liquid Foundation we like to say is similar in consistency to peanut butter; the mixture can separate in the water with the pigments resting at the bottom and the liquids rising to the top. Once shook, the release of the pigment burst to a powder finish, releasing the raw ingredient and therefore, giving off a scent. This scent comes directly from the raw ingredients and doesn’t contain any kind of harmful fragrance or chemicals.
