Caring for Rosacea: Effective Skin Management and Self-Care Tips
Rosacea is a common skin condition that causes flushing and visible blood vessels in your face. It may also produce small, pus-filled bumps. These signs and symptoms may flare up for weeks to months and then go away for a while, it can also be mistaken for acne.
The cause of rosacea is unknown, but it could be due to an overactive immune system, heredity, environmental factors or a combination of these. It is not caused by poor hygiene and it's not contagious. While the symptoms of rosacea can come and go, there is no permanent cure for this issue. However, with proper treatment and by taking good care of your skin, it's possible to control and manage this condition.
Dermatologists do not recommend people try to pop or squeeze. Attempting to pop or squeeze them can aggravate the condition and lead to further inflammation and potential scarring.
Types of Rosacea
PREROSACEA
Frequent episodes of blushing and flushing of the face and neck.
VASCULAR ROSACEA
Swelling of blood vessels under the facial skin, leading to swollen, warm skin (common in women)
INFLAMMATORY ROSACEA
Formation of pimples and enlarged blood vessels on the face
RHINOPHYMA
Enlarged oil glands in the nose and cheeks that cause an enlarged, bulbous red nose (almost only seen in men)
Flare Ups
Many things you do can cause Rosacea to flare. Common triggers for rosacea include becoming overheated, wind, spicy foods, hot beverages, and alcohol. Even stress and your diet can contribute to flare ups. It’s important to find out what causes your rosacea to flare up and avoid those triggers.
Skincare Tips for Rosacea:
GENTLE CLEANSING
Use a mild, non-abrasive cleanser to clean your face twice daily, and avoid scrubbing or harsh exfoliation. Use a soft facial brush in circles to sluff dead skin when cleansing.
MOISTURIZE
Apply a natural, plant based moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated and reduce dryness.
SUN PROTECTION
Protect your skin from the sun by wearing sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily, and use wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses when outdoors.
COOL WATER: Use cool or lukewarm water when washing your face, as hot water can exacerbate redness.
Makeup for Rosacea:
PRIMER
- Use our fragrance-free primer to create a smooth canvas for makeup application.
FOUNDATION
- Choose our foundation that's specifically designed for sensitive or rosacea-prone skin.
- Apply foundation sparingly, using a makeup sponge. Avoid brushes for this application.
- Blend the foundation evenly, but avoid excessive layering.
COLOUR CORRECTION
- Spot check and apply with a foundation brush sparingly
to areas with the most redness.
- Use a creamy, hydrating concealer to cover any persistent redness or blemishes.
- Gently pat the concealer on the problem areas, rather than rubbing or dragging it across the skin.
BLUSH
- Be cautious with blush. Choose products that are not too pigmented or have shimmer, as they can
emphasize redness.
- Apply blush lightly to the apples of your cheeks for a natural flush.
LIPSTICK
- Stick to neutral or cool-toned lip colours to balance the redness in your complexion.
